Tomorrow Naples will be the “European Gelato Capital”. The ribbon cutting of the event “Naples celebrates the Europe of homemade gelato” will take place at the Hotel Royal Continental at 5pm. Representatives of seven European countries will attend, as well as international guests and the highest civil, religious and military authorities. The European world of artisan gelato will meet-up for a triple celebration: 2018 sees the 30th anniversary of Artglace (Confédération des Associations des Artisans Glaciers de la Communité Européenne), the 20th anniversary of G.A. (National Committee for the Defense and Diffusion of Artisan Gelato and Production Own) and the 20th anniversary of the Gelatieri Campani Committee. The ceremony will be moderated by Gabriele Blair, actor and presenter.
Therefore, the initiatives promoted over the years, the value of artisan gelato as European excellence in the agri-food sector will be remembered and the people who have distinguished themselves over the years will be rewarded. A dinner will follow in order to share an important accomplishment for the sector.
“Among the fresh dairy products – reports Ferdinando Buonocore, President of the Gelatieri Campani Committee- artisan gelato represents excellence in terms of quality and food safety, which enhances the agri-food products of each individual European country. In the whole food landscape, the European Parliament has so far dedicated a “Day” only to artisan gelato. It should be strongly reiterated – continues Buonocore – that the “European Day of Artisan Gelato” is a patrimony of the gelatieri worldwide and also of the gelato industry: a unique commemorative stamp is extremely appreciated by philatelic collectors”.
In 2012 the European Parliament established the “European Day of Artisan Gelato”: since then, every year Europe officially celebrates gelato on 24 March (the pioneers of gelato started working around that date and they stopped at the end of October, now everybody loves gelato all around the year!). In 2018 the official “European Gelato Day” flavor is “German Black Forest”: it is a variegated chocolate gelato enriched with sour cherries, a precious German creation.
The event in Naples will also celebrate the “Gelato Archangels”, men and women who witness what is “gelato”, product of the continuous research, passion and skills of expert craftsmen.
