For the first time in Italy Studio Giangaleazzo Visconti presents photography exhibition of the award-winning British photographer Juno Calypso. The intimate photos of the artist represent two subjects: desire and disappointment. “It’s a very relatable topic for both men and women: that disappointment in yourself, that desire for the perfect self. It can expand inside your body like a sad balloon. I guess I’m having my sense of humor to burst those balloons” – comments Juno Calypso.
Looking at Calypso’s artworks, firstly you notice an immaculate glamorous house with its perfect white and pink kitchen, fake garden and dustless roses. Everything seems simple and pleasant to the eye. But you don’t realize that there is a hidden trick in the scenario. Later, you spy a pair of legs on the floor in the kitchen, a floating corpse in the pool. Or lying on the carpet Calypso in a wig, trying to reach a food can. These uniquely dark and ironic self-portraits make you think that the woman is having a silent breakdown.
29 years old East London artist turns all her artworks into a simple metaphor for woman’s aging or getting ugly. Being not perfect enough. All her artworks express “beautiful” loneliness, despair and fear. These photographs are attractive and stylistically beautiful. But at the same time scary because the main idea, hidden behind them, is relatable.
Juno Calypso’s photo exhibition is open at Studio Giangaleazzo Visconti in Milan until January 11st.
